Very old, and unique, the Santa Monica Pier is a historic landmark -- a
wonderful wooden institution that has managed through the years to distill
all the elements into a mellow and unmistakable "pierness." Known widely
as 'the pier of the people,' it remains the last vestige of a once grand
tradition that flourished along the California coastline at the turn of the century.

Pen Holder Sets |
In January 1983, during a stormy season that brought the area three
times its normal rainfall, this venerable old wharf was severely battered
by a pair of vicious winter storms. Tons of wreckage piled up in the sand
after 400 feet of the weathered boardwalk collapsed and washed ashore.
